چکیده

Navy research shows that water delivered as a fine mist (or fog) is more effective than sprays in suppressing large scale fires[1, 2]. Fine mists have three distinct advantages. First, the small drop sizes that make up the mist allow the water to reach obstructed fires more easily than larger spray drops. Secondly, the water mist system has a lower water demand than the spray system. Lastly, smaller drops evaporate more rapidly, thus displacing the oxygen more quickly (a 5 μm diameter drop at 300 K in dry air will evaporate in ~17 msec).

Nir-diode Laser Based In-situ Measurement of Molecular Oxygen in Full-scale Fire Suppression Tests

The accurate measurement of oxygen is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of tire suppressant agents and to model the dynamics of the suppression process. We employed tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) at 760nm to detect molecular oxygen. This technique has sensitivity to oxygen, minimal interference from other species, and capability of in-situ operation. Measurements were...

A review of recent advances in semiconductor laser based gas monitors

When first tunable diode lasers were developed in the mid-1960s they found immediate application as much needed tunable sources for high-resolution laser absorption spectroscopy commonly referred to as TDLAS (tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy). Substantial improvements in sensitivity and detection speed have been achieved since then and an increasing number of laser based gas monitori...

A Bayesian Approach for Gas Concentration Reconstruction Based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

We address the problem of 2D reconstruction of the gas concentration map from its 1D path averages based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). This problem is challenging because typically only a very small number of paths are available. In addition, a path may not be set up to our desirable configuration. These challenges result in a large percentage of unobserved pixels in t...

RoboGas – A Mobile Robotic System for Remote Leak Sensing and Localization in Large Industrial Environments: Overview and First Results

In order to automate the routine inspections in large industrial environments a mobile robotic system is being developed in the project RoboGas. The robot’s sensor-head consists of different instruments for remote sensing using multiple measurement principles. First results show that passive IRthermographic imaging can be used to detect leaks in pipes as well as liquid spills on the ground. The...

Simultaneous measurements of multiple flow parameters for scramjet characterization using tunable diode-laser sensors.

This paper reports the simultaneous measurements of multiple flow parameters in a scramjet facility operating at a nominal Mach number of 2.5 using a sensing system based on tunable diode-laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The TDLAS system measures velocity, temperature, and water vapor partial pressure at three different locations of the scramjet: the inlet, the combustion region near the ...
